Another success story from Heritage of Hudson!
July 27, 2018
Heritage of Hudson takes great pride in positive resident outcomes and returning residents home stronger than when they arrived. This is a remarkable story about one of our residents, Kenny, who was able to endure loads of treatment to finally return home with his family.
After spending nearly two months in the hospital, Kenny admitted to Heritage of Hudson in January 2018. Kenny suffered from a stroke, weakness to left side of body, and had difficulty swallowing which required the placement of a feeding tube. He required maximum assistance for all his activities of daily living, was unable to walk more than five feet, and was unable to swallow safely without a pureed modified diet.
Due to his highly compromised condition, Kenny was treated with a robust treatment regimen, including Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies. His treatment plan involved neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic exercises, gait training, oral motor exercises, and much more. Additionally, Kenny was able to benefit greatly from the highly specialized Aquatic therapy offered at Heritage of Hudson. He completed over 20 aquatic therapy sessions over the course of 3 months, which improved his strength, balance, and mobility.
Kenny completed his treatment plan, and was able to meet several goals set by him and the therapy team. This included the feeding tube removal three months after admission, and he was finally able to eat regular food. Prior to discharge Kenny was walking over 225 feet with only the assistance of a cane. He only required minimal assistance with all activities of daily living, and was able to independently perform all bed mobility transfers.
The discharge planning involved in Kenny’s case required the coordination with community resources such as the VA, and home choice waiver programs. This allowed Kenny to receive additional equipment and services in the home when he returned.
Kenny discharged home with his family in July 2018. Heritage of Hudson celebrates the progress Kenny made during his stay! We are truly blessed to have cared for such a determined individual who suffered through some very tough times. We are very proud of our dedicated nursing staff, therapy team, and all Heritage of Hudson employees who helped get Kenny back on his feet! We wish Kenny the best of luck at home, and know he is prepared and equipped to care for himself. Look at Kenny now!

See what Kenny says himself about his stay at Heritage of Hudson:
I feel as though I came to Heritage of Hudson like humpty dumpty – I was broken. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t eat, and I couldn’t even stand up straight for more than five minutes on my own. Thanks to this amazing care staff and unbelievable dedicated therapy department acting like all the kings horses and all the kings men, they put me back together again! I was not super enthusiastic about using the aquatic therapy pool, but it was life changing. I was able to move easier within water with the therapist than land.
The more I worked in the water with the therapist the stronger I became on land. The speech therapist was in my mind, a miracle worker. She worked with me on many different swallowing techniques and eventually I was able to have my feeding tube removed, and now I am able to enjoy a regular diet. What my family finds most impressive is that at the end of my physical therapy, I now can walk with a cane 100+ feet. I am very grateful to the Heritage of Hudson staff for everything! If it wasn’t for them, I would not be able to return home with family! Thank you!
